Success at Tap Cancer Out: Checkmat Charlotte Jiu-Jitsu Shines Bright

This past weekend, the Checkmat Charlotte Jiu-Jitsu team made an impressive showing at the Tap Cancer Out BJJ competition, not only excelling on the mats but also making a significant impact off them. Our team’s dedication was on full display as we contributed to a great cause, raising over $23,000 in this single event. This incredible effort has pushed our lifetime fundraising total to over $70,000, a testament to the commitment and generosity of our team and supporters.

The competition was fierce, and with over 45 of our team members participating—including a spirited group of children—the energy and enthusiasm were palpable. Our young competitors showed incredible heart and skill, bringing their best to each match and earning well-deserved accolades.

Here’s a rundown of the standout performances:

• Jocelyn Barber took home 1st place with an unbeaten record of 3-0.
• Ligi Nilo also claimed 1st place, going undefeated at 2-0.
• Semaj Yacko continued the trend with another 1st place finish, scoring 2-0.
• Ridge Barber and Collin Barber each fought valiantly, securing 2nd place with records of 2-1.
• Hunter Grant, Mac Morris, and Aaliyah Allen displayed great skill and determination, each earning 2nd place finishes.
• Gabriel Quinn and Noah Guerva showed strong performances, each achieving 3rd place.
• Steele Nitchman, Zoe Woods, Gracie Otting, and Greyson Guerva fought hard, each earning a 4th place in their categories.

Special mentions to Korbin Frenning, Charles Otting, and Avery Monroe, who did not place but showed great spirit and resilience in their matches.

The effort and achievements of all our competitors, especially our young warriors, deserve the highest praise. They not only competed with skill and determination but also embodied the spirit of giving, knowing their participation contributed to a cause much larger than the sport itself.

As we celebrate these achievements, we are reminded of the power of community and the impact we can make when we come together for a cause. Congratulations to all the competitors and a heartfelt thank you to everyone who supported our fundraising efforts. Here’s to many more successful tournaments and continued success in our mission to make a difference, both on and off the mats.
