What got you started in BJJ?
I came across a video someone had posted of me wrestling back in high school. Despite leading the entire match I ended up getting pinned in the third round. I watched the video probably 100 times. All I wanted was to jump through the screen and finish the match the way I was supposed to. It was clear I still had room to grow.
Jiu-Jitsu was a logical next step. My friend Brock told me about it, so I thought I would try it out.
I jumped around gyms for a while until I found Checkmat Charlotte. It had several people who were serious about competing and wanted to go at a high intensity.
Also, everyone was super friendly, and more than willing to roll with a spazy white belt who didn't know anything. I’ve been here ever since.
In closing, what would you suggest to anyone thinking about getting into BJJ?
BJJ is accessible, you will find everything from Olympic level athletes, to dads with knee replacements. Both of which will be able wipe the floor with you the moment you walk in to the gym. Don’t be afraid of being too weak, slow, fat, or short. I assure you I have been tapped by all of these people many times. It is a humbling sport that I would recommend to anyone.
